Compress, optimize or convert images

- Compress your image. When it comes to webdesign it is crucial to have the smallest file size in kilobytes. The smaller the file the shorten the download time. Most of the people still using dial-up modems. It is not a smart move to loose visitors only because of the long download time.
- Optimizing your image. Requires long years of experience to choose the best file format for a given purpose. There are so many file formats, not one of them are offering further options regarding color depth, number of layers, transparency, etc. Some of them are compatible over different platforms as MAC and PC; others are not. Most file formats have been developed with time, fregmented again to different versions.

Bitmaps
TIFF - Tagged Image Format -- an industry standard in DTP
PCX - one of the earliest formats. Rooting back to the before-PC times.
BMP - OS/2 Bitmap file format
MAC - MACPaint Bitmap
JPEG or JPG - JPEG bitmap. Sophistically compressed files with good visual quality. Supported by all HTML browsers -- this is the dominant image file format on the Internet.
GIF - Originally developed for use on Compuserve, Internet's predecessor. Supports animation and capable to limit color depth to maintain small file size. Very useful when small but sharp images needed. PNG - Maybe the most useful format for Internet usage. Most of the web browsers support PNG however there is really a few site use this fomat.
Vector / Mixed formats
AI - Adobe Illustrator format. The most popular vector based image format.
CMX - COREL Presentation Exchange EPS - Encapsulated PostScript. Kind of a language for the printers and RIP devices. It can include bitmaps also using virtually infinitive resolution.
WMF - Windows Metafile. Includes bitmaps, too. Very useful since Microsoft programs are so popular.
DXF - AutoCAD. Industry standard in CAD areas.
PLT - HPGL plotter file. For blueprints, cutting/engraving devices, etc.
Of course the list is not complete. There are hundreds of image formats however just a few of them makes sense to use.
